This scan is to confirm your due date and the well-being of your pregnancy.

Trans-abdominal ultrasound scan plus a trans-vaginal (internal) scan if required.

Trans abdominal ultrasound scan. Some warm gel is applied to your lower abdomen and a probe is used to transmit ultrasound images to the screen for interpretation. A trans-vaginal (internal) scan may also be required to fully assess your pregnancy.

You will be asked to empty your bladder and a probe will be inserted into the vagina as far as a tampon. This additional technique can give extra information which may be critical in assessing the well-being of your pregnancy.

Why have one

The scan will confirm your due date and assess the viability of the pregnancy. The scan is most accurate around 7-8 weeks. We can also scan you if you are having problems with your pregnancy e.g. bleeding, pain. We can then check to see if your baby is alive or whether you might be having a miscarriage or whether you might have an ectopic pregnancy.
